"Machu Picchu", World Heritage Site in Peru
In 2025, I traveled around the world twice, and on my second trip going east, I went to Machu Picchu in Peru.
The journey to Machu Picchu
The nearest airport to Machu Picchu is Cusco, Peru, and from there I took the train to Aguas Calientes, a village at the base of Machu Picchu. The train is operated by two railway companies, Peru Rail and Inca Rail, and both cost roughly the same and run the same route. I somehow wanted to try Peru Rail's blue passenger cars (they look really cool), so I took Peru Rail to Machu Picchu.
The meeting point for Peru Rail is a station called Wanchaq near Cusco Airport, but from there I traveled by bus instead of train.

The bus drove to Ollantaytambo station, which is located halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu, and then transferred to the train.

I really wanted to enjoy the scenery from the train, but since I was riding at night, I could hardly see anything.
Arrival in Aguascalientes
After about two hours on the train, I arrived in Aguas Calientes, a village at the foot of Machu Picchu. It was surprisingly more prosperous than I expected, and even though we arrived after 9pm, the shops were open and the atmosphere was lively.

The next morning, I got my ticket to Machu Picchu.
The next morning, I went to the ticket center to reserve my entrance ticket to Machu Picchu. decided to go, most of the tickets for that year were sold out online, so I had no choice but to apply in person on site (applications can be made the day before your visit).
I didn't want to end up in person only to find that the tickets were sold out, so even though it was a bit pricey, I applied for a service on To be honest, I wasn't sure if I had actually reserved a ticket, but with the staff 's guidance, I managed to get a ticket for Circuit 2 's guidance, I managed to get a ticket for Circuit 2, which is said to be particularly popular (among several courses, the course that allows you to enter the ruins area). I spent the day relaxing in Aguas Calientes and waiting for the next day.

Finally to Machu Picchu
On the 3rd day after arriving in Aguas Calientes, it was finally time to head to Machu Picchu. I wasn't sure I wanted to spend three days in a village with no nightlife, but I ended up suffering from altitude sickness on the second day, had a constant headache, and slept in the hotel all day. 's probably a good thing I booked two days in advance.
The ticket service I booked included a Machu Picchu guide on the day, so I was assigned a one-on-one guide. I booked The ticket service I booked included a Machu Picchu guide on the day, so I was assigned a one-on-one guide.
It was a little hard to find the bus meeting point, but thanked to my guide, I was able to line up properly and board the bus smoothly. It was a little hard to find the bus meeting point, but thanked to my guide, I was able to line up properly and board the bus smoothly.

Entrance to Machu Picchu

The bus arrived at the entrance to Machu Picchu and I was finally able to enter. It seemed like people lined up according to the circuit (course) their tickets indicated, but this was also very confusing for first-time visitors. Once inside, I walked up the stairs with my guide. It was not a steep path, but there was a long uphill climb that left me out of breath.

It was a view that I had seen countless times in books and photographs.

Afterwards, I walked through the ruins of Machu Picchu with my guide. It was really great to be able to walk through the ruins.

After visiting Machu Picchu, I headed back to Cusco...
Thus ended my visit to Machu Picchu, one of the most famous World Heritage Sites in the world. I said goodbye to my guide, returned by bus to Aguas Calientes, got ready at the hotel, and prepared to take the train back to Cusco...
...I'll continue this story in a separate post...Enjoy this week's reports.
